Mossdale

Mossdale NX6570

The village of Mossdale is about 6 miles south of New Galloway on the A762. It used to be the railway station for New Galloway before the railway closed. It has a post office/ general store and is close the start of some interesting forest walks and the Raider’s Road. Downstream from the village the remains of the old “Raider’s Bridge” may be seen.

The Raider’s Road is a forestry toll road, open in the summer running between the A712 and the A 762 following the River Dee on a route described in “The Raiders” by S R Crockett (see Laurieston), and used for cattle rustling. Along the road there is a picnic area beside the otter pool in the river, with a statue of an otter and one beside the Stroan Viaduct that once carried the railway. There are forest sculptures along the way and in the summer there is a festival where people are encouraged to go and build their own. A number of walks and cycle ways may also be found along the way.
